Plantar Warts

What is it?

Also known as verruca vulgaris is a type of skin growth caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Plantar warts are generally harmless and will often go away on their own over time.

Causes and risk factors:

  • Caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). This enters through minor cuts, weak points, or breaks in the outer layer of the skin.

  • Contact to the virus directly.

  • Virus thrives in warm, moist environment. 

  • Walking barefoot around swimming pools, locker rooms.

Signs and clinical features:

  • Small, rough growth on the bottom of your foot. Commonly at the toes or on the ball or heel.

  • Hard, thickened skin over the lesion where wart has grown. 

  • Black pinpoints (clotted blood vessels).

  • Cluster of growths on sole of foot (Mosaic warts).

  • Pain or tenderness when walking or standing.

  • Interrupted normal grove lines and ridges in the skin.
