Foot Wound Care

Foot ulcer/wound is an open lesion/sore within the skin. It can be caused by a variety of factors and if left untreated can causes serious health concerns.

Most common causes:

  • Complication of uncontrolled diabetes, (neuropathy, vascular disease)

  • Cellulitis

  • Neuropathy

  • Trauma to the foot or toe

  • Poor blood circulation

  • Peripheral vascular disease

  • Deformed toes

  • Friction and/or High pressure areas

If left untreated it may cause:

  • Infection

  • Amputation

  • Sepsis

  • Hospitalisation

What we do to manage and treat your foot ulcer:

  • Perform vascular assessments with a ultrasound doppler and/or toe pressure. 

  • Perform a neurological test to assess the protective sensation of the feet.

  • Perform in depth wound assessment. 

  • Irrigate and cleanse the wound and surrounding skin.

  • Debride any non-viable tissue and ensure reduction in bacterial load. 

  • Administer medicated dressings through aseptic technique.

  • Assess and provide offloading modalities if required. 

  • Provide foot ulcer education and advice.

  • Provide a full report to your GP.

  • Book your next review for re-dressing and on going care and monitoring.
