Diabetic Foot Care & Management

What is it?

Diabetes is a medical condition where the body is unable to properly regulate blood sugar levels. This results in high blood sugar levels in the body which can lead to a variety of serious health issues if left unmanaged.

Complications

Most common foot complications of diabetes is:

Nerve damage
(Neuropathy) 

  • Numbness

  • Pain

  • Tingling

  • Lack of sensation in feet

Reduced blood flow to feet

  • Pain

  • Colour change in feet

  • Reduced temperature in feet

Changes in skin and nails

Increase risk of foot ulcer

  • Dryness

  • Cracked heels

  • Hyperkeratosis

  • Yellow discoloured nails

  • Brittle thick nails

  • Foot infection

Prevention and Care

What we do to prevent these foot complications:

  • Perform vascular assessments with a ultrasound doppler and/or toe pressure. 

  • Perform a neurological test to assess the protective sensation of the feet.

  • Assess any skin integrity issues and ensure skin is intact.

  • Provide a high quality skin and nail treatment.

  • Provide diabetic foot care education and advice.

  • Provide a full report to your GP.
